Public Resources

Serving the scientific community is at the center of our mission to accelerate progress toward understanding the brain and neurological systems. Creating tools and data that advance the pursuits of the thousands of scientists around the world is our contribution to revolutionary neuroscience. To this end, the Allen Institute’s resources—each a groundbreaking creation—are free and publicly available online via the ALLEN BRAIN ATLAS data portal.

By integrating genomic and anatomic information, as well as sophisticated data search and viewing tools, our unique resources offer researchers unprecedented access to details and patterns of gene activity throughout the brain.  The Human Genome Project established what the genes are.  The Allen Institute’s public resources take a critical next step toward understanding their biological functions by revealing where they are expressed, or “turned on,” in the brain.

Atlases

The major Allen Institute atlas initiatives in the ALLEN BRAIN ATLAS family of online resources integrate extensive genomic and anatomic data, yielding uniquely comprehensive resources that provide researchers with a critical window into the biology underlying nervous system function. These atlases include:
  • ALLEN Mouse Brain Atlas
  • ALLEN Spinal Cord Atlas
  • ALLEN Developing Mouse Brain Atlas
  • ALLEN Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas
  • ALLEN Human Brain Atlas

Other Resources

In addition to our comprehensive atlas initiatives, we take on other significant projects related to the study and understanding of the brain. These projects include a variety of government-funded research programs and unique collaborations with other partner organizations and scientists who share our desire to fuel new discoveries in neuroscience. The resulting public resources include:
  • BrainSpan Atlas of the Developing Human Brain
  • NIH Blueprint Non-Human Primate (NHP) Atlas
  • Ivy Glioblastoma Atlas Project
  • Mouse Diversity Study
  • Sleep Study
