Ed Lein, Ph.D., Director, Neuroscience
Ed Lein received his B.S. in biochemistry from Purdue University in 1993 and his Ph.D. in neurobiology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999. His postdoctoral work at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies involved using laser capture microdissection, DNA microarrays and high-throughput in situ hybridization to examine highly specific gene expression in subregions and layers of the hippocampus and neocortex. A focus of Lein’s current work at the Allen Institute is utilizing gene expression as a tool to define specific neuronal subtypes in the brain, and genetic manipulation of these cells as a means of understanding their roles in higher-level behaviors.
