Giulio Tononi, M.D., Ph.D

Giulio Tononi is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has held faculty positions in Pisa, New York, San Diego and Madison, Wisconsin. The main focus of his work has been the scientific understanding of consciousness. His integrated information theory is a comprehensive theory of what consciousness is, how it can be measured, and how it is realized in the brain. The theory is being tested with neuroimaging, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and computer models. The other main focus of his work is to understand the function of sleep. In 2005, Dr. Tononi received the NIH Director's Pioneer Award for his work on the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis on sleep function. Dr. Tononi received his M.D. in 1985 and Ph.D. in neuroscience in 1989 from the University of Pisa, Italy. He is currently Professor of Psychiatry at University of Wisconsin.
